# What is backspacing and why does it matter?
## Backspacing measures the distance from a wheel's inner edge to its mounting surface, affecting clearance with brakes and suspension.
If you’re customizing your wheels, you’ve probably heard the term **backspacing**, but what does it mean exactly?
Backspacing is the distance between the **inner edge of the wheel** (the part facing your suspension and brakes) and the **mounting surface** (where the wheel attaches to your hub).
Why is this important? Because **backspacing affects clearance** inside the wheel well.
- **Decreased backspacing** moves the wheel slightly outward, creating more space between the wheel and your brakes or suspension. This can help prevent rubbing and allow for larger brake kits or suspension components.
- **Increased backspacing** moves the wheel inward, which can reduce clearance and may cause contact with suspension parts or brake components if it’s too much.
Understanding backspacing helps you pick the right wheels for your vehicle, especially if you’re running aftermarket brakes, lift kits, or wider tires. Correct backspacing ensures proper clearance, safe installation, and the look you want without any interference.
