# How does tire width impact car handling and stability?
## Wider tires increase the contact patch for more lateral grip and braking traction, but can reduce fuel efficiency and may cause fitment issues if not properly matched to your wheel and car.
Tire width - the measurement across the face of the tire from sidewall to sidewall, expressed in millimeters - has a direct and meaningful impact on how your car handles and feels on the road.
**How wider tires affect handling**
A wider tire increases the contact patch - the area of rubber touching the road. This generally means:
- **More lateral grip:** Better cornering traction and resistance to sliding through turns
- **More braking traction:** Shorter stopping distances in dry conditions
- **More stability:** A planted, confidence-inspiring feel at highway speeds
**Trade-offs of wider tires**
- **Reduced fuel efficiency:** Wider tires have more rolling resistance, which translates to modestly higher fuel consumption
- **Aquaplaning risk:** A very wide tire can ride on top of water - tread design and channel depth become more important
- **Fitment concerns:** Wider tires may rub fenders, require spacers, or need a different wheel offset to clear suspension components properly
**Finding the right width**
Tire width must be matched to both your wheel width and your car's wheel well clearance.
